PURUS COMPLETES AMMONIA AND LPG CO-LOADING

Jan 22, 2025 | Marine fuel & lubricant news

Provider of maritime services provider for gas transport and offshore wind Purus recently completed the first co-loaded shipment operation of ammonia (NH3) and propane (LPG) on its ammonia fuel-ready Medium-size Gas Carrier (MGC), ‘Green Power’.

The vessel is currently on time charter to Trafigura, and the operation was carried out for CF Industries. The ammonia parcel was loaded in Louisiana, while the LPG parcel was loaded into a separate tank in Texas. After a transatlantic crossing, the ammonia was safely discharged at Tees Port in the UK. The LPG was discharged via a ship-to-ship (STS) transfer operation in the Mediterranean. This achievement follows Green Power’s first STS ammonia transfer in July 2024, also conducted under its time charter with Trafigura.

Purus owns and operates MGCs for ammonia transport, and Green Power is one of its nine MGCs (three on the water and six newbuilds). The vessels, built at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in South Korea, are ammonia propulsion-ready, and will meet the EEDI Phase III requirement.

The co-loaded operation is believed by Purus to reinforce its leadership in ammonia transport while showcasing cargo management capabilities. Purus claims a commitment to advancing operational flexibility, enabling customers to make agile cargo deployment decisions that optimise economies of scale and reduce emissions, further enabling the clean energy transition.
