NYK’S SIXTH LNG-FUELLED PCTC BEGINS OPERATION

Oct 20, 2023 | Shipbuilding & ship repair news

NYK’s sixth LNG-fuelled pure car and truck carrier (PCTC), ‘Sumire Leader’, has started its transportation service for the Japanese company Mazda Motor Corporation, arriving at the port of Hiroshima on 17 October and the port of Nakanoseki (Yamaguchi Prefecture) on 18 October.

This is the last of four low-emission LNG-fuelled PCTCs delivered from China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Nanjing). Desiring to realise and pass on a healthy global environment through environment-friendly transportation, NYK is naming its LNG-fuelled PCTCs after flowers,  ‘sumire’ being Japanese for violets.

The 78,866gt Sumire Leader is 199.9m long, with capacity for 7,000 cars. It will transport finished vehicles, including those made by Mazda Motor Corporation, sailing under the Liberian flag, and seeks to fulfil customers’ demands for a lower environmental burden in the logistics field.
