NYK TAKES DELIVERY OF SECOND LPG/AMMONIA TANKER

Jun 28, 2024 | Shipbuilding & ship repair news

A naming ceremony has been held at the Sakaide Works of Kawasaki Heavy Industries for ‘Gas Amethyst’, a large LPG carrier jointly owned by Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and Astomos Energy Corporation.

Following Gas Garnet, which was delivered in March 2024, Gas Amethyst is the second jointly owned LPG dual-fuel vessel to be delivered this year and the fourth LPG dual-fuel vessel for Astomos Energy. In addition to LPG, the vessel will be able to transport ammonia if future demand increases. Ammonia is attracting attention as a means of realising a decarbonised society. The ship is 229.9m long with 86,953m3 cargo tank capacity.

Gas Amethyst is equipped with a dual-fuel engine that can use HFO and LPG as fuel. It employs a shaft generator, enabling the vessel to stop operating the diesel generator during standard navigation and realise full LPG-fuelled navigation. Compared to conventional heavy oil-fuelled vessels, SOx and CO2 in the exhaust gas are reduced by more than 95% and 20%, respectively, when the ship is fuelled by LPG.
