MITSUI PREPARES FOR HYDROGEN ENGINE DEVELOPMENT

Oct 23, 2023 | Marine fuel & lubricant news

Mitsui E&S has completed the construction of a hydrogen gas supply facility, including a liquid hydrogen tank and hydrogen gas compressor, at it Tamano Factory, aiming for the early launch of hydrogen-related business.

The Tokyo-headquartered company has already conducted a demonstration operation. The Tamano Factory is the production base for products such as large marine diesel engines and industrial machinery/reciprocating compressors. The new facility is capable of supplying a large volume of hydrogen gas at 1,000Nm3/h.

Mitsui E&S plans to supply hydrogen from this facility to its large (7000kW) marine engine project, subsidised through a Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, which was adopted together with Daihatsu Diesel in 2021. In this project, Mitsui E&S will develop hydrogen combustion technology along with a booster compressor that boosts hydrogen up to 35MPa and a GVT (Gas Valve Train) that controls hydrogen supply. Mitsui E&S will establish the coupling operation technology for fuel supply and large marine engines, and accelerate the development of hydrogen combustion propulsion plants.

The reciprocating compressor, which is the core equipment of the facility, is adopted from Mitsui E&S group company Kaji Technology, along with the booster compressor. Mitsui E&S has applied high-pressure seal technology under non-lubricated conditions to this reciprocating compressor and conducted a demonstration operation. By deploying this seal technology, the company will satisfy the high-pressure specifications required for compressors for the hydrogen supply chain and contribute to the development of the hydrogen supply infrastructure.
