Mitsubishi Shipbuilding has contracted Japanese company Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding (Mitsui E&S) to supply two WT-3 high-pressure boil off gas (BOG) compressors for the LNG fuel supply systems for 210,000 dwt LNG-fuelled bulk carriers to be built by Imabari Shipbuilding Group for NYK Line.
Mitsui’s BOG compressor has its roots in the company’s 60 year-plus experience of manufacturing reciprocating compressors for various industries. These compressors pressurise and deliver gas through the reciprocating motion of pistons. The high-pressure BOG compressors for marine use have been developed in collaboration with Mitsui E&S subsidiary Kaji Technology Corporation.
The WT-3 BOG compressor is designed as a dedicated product for high-pressure LNG dual-fuel engines, to boost the pressure of surplus BOG naturally generated from LNG fuel tanks of LNG-fuelled vessels up to 31.5 MPaG and supply it to the engines as fuel. Surplus BOG generated from fuel tanks has previously been disposed of through burning, but it can be utilised effectively as fuel for LNG-fuelled vessels equipped with compressors. The WT-3 is designed for easy installation thanks to its compact design, and by contributing to the reduction of fuel consumption, it offers lower operating costs and reduced CO2 emissions for LNG-fuelled vessels.
As a MAN B&W licensee. Mitsui E&S has built a large number of ME-GI two stroke LNG dual-fuel engines in Japan, using Mitsui’s own design high pressure pumps, type MHP-3 for the LNG fuel supply systems. The company can now provide, in-house, a complete set of equipment for LNG-fuelled vessels comprising dual fuel ME-GI engines, MHP-3 high-pressure fuel pumps, and WT-3 high-pressure BOG compressors.
