Korea Shipbuilding says that it is striving to develop eco-friendly ship technology in line with the global decarbonisation trend, and recently obtained a conceptual design certification (AiP) for an ammonia dual-fuel propulsion Suezmax-class crude oil carrier from the Norwegian classification society DNV.
The ammonia dual-fuel propulsion vessel is an eco-friendly vessel designed to use bunker C oil (diesel) and ammonia fuel. Ammonia is said to be attracting attention as one of the next-generation eco-friendly ship fuels by global ship owners because it is a carbon-free fuel that does not emit carbon, and related research and development is continuously progressing.
The certification was achieved through a joint development project with DNV, Panasia, Dongsung Finetech, Mokpo University, and Mokpo Maritime University. Panasia developed the fuel supply system, Dongsung Finetech oversaw the fuel storage tank, Mokpo University conducted the ammonia spill analysis, Mokpo Maritime University conducted the risk assessment, and Korea Shipbuilding oversaw the ammonia fuel supply system and the overall safety design project for toxic leaks.
Lee Sang-chul, head of Technology, Korea Shipbuilding said: “We will secure technology advancement and cost competitiveness by gradually securing technologies such as eco-friendly fuel propulsion and energy-saving devices to respond to the IMO’s ‘2050 Net Zero’ and realise decarbonisation of the shipbuilding and offshore industry, and further strengthen industry-academia-research cooperation.”
In addition, Korea Shipbuilding has obtained conceptual design certifications for a number of eco-friendly dual-fuel propulsion vessels. In the case of ammonia fuel, the company obtained the conceptual design certification of an Aframax-class crude oil carrier from the Korean Register of Shipping (KR) in 2022. For LNG fuel, the company has received design certification for a shuttle tanker from DNV, and for methanol fuel, it received a design certification for a Suezmax-class crude oil carrier from DNV in October 2023.
