Nov 29, 2024 | Shipbuilding & ship repair news

Car carrier vessel ‘Pontus Highway’, of 7,000 vehicle capacity, has been delivered to Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (‘K’ Line) by China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Jiangsu) .

A sister to Nereus Highway, delivered from the same builder in August 2024, the 199.8m 75,698gt vessel is mainly fuelled by LNG. LNG fuel is expected to reduce emissions of CO2 by 25% to 30%, SOx by almost 100%, and NOx by about 75%, in compliance with IMO Tier III regulations, compared to conventional vessels using HFO. It is equipped with a WinGD 7X62DF-2.1 dual-fuel electronically controlled engine, designed to reduce methane slip when using LNG fuel. It has been classed by DNV and will sail under the Panama flag.

‘K’line’s 2030 interim target is to improve CO2 emissions efficiency by 50% compared with 2008, surpassing the IMO target of a 40% improvement. The target for 2050 is to achieve net-zero GHG emissions.
