‘K’ LINE TAKES DELIVERY OF LNG-FUELLED PCTC

Oct 17, 2024 | Shipbuilding & ship repair news

A car carrier vessel of 7,000 CEU capacity, named ‘Poseidon Highway’, has recently been delivered to Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (‘K’ Line) of Japan from Imabari Shipbuilding.

The vessel is mainly fuelled by LNG, and is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 25% to 30% and SOx emissions by almost 100% compared with conventionally-fuelled ships. This next-generation environment-friendly vessel is expected to cut emissions of NOx by 80% to 90% by using EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) in addition to LNG fuel. It is equipped with a MAN B&W 6S60ME-C10.5-GI-EGRBP dual-fuel electronic control main engine.

This is the first of ‘K’ Line’s new car carriers to acquire the ClassNK notations (Fire Fighting) (Electric Vehicle). Including this vessel, five car carriers operated by “K” Line have acquired notations.

‘K’ Line has set its 2030 interim target of improving CO2 emissions efficiency by 50% compared with 2008, surpassing the IMO target of a 40% improvement. Furthermore, its target for 2050 is to achieve net-zero GHG emissions. ‘K’ Line will continue to work on the introduction of new fuels which have a low environmental impact and take on the challenge of achieving these targets.
