Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) and the Port of Shanghai have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the establishment of a green shipping corridor.
The declaration aims to make the shipping industry greener and lower carbon, as well as to promote the sustainable development of global maritime transport. With the maritime industry increasingly focusing on a green transition, the two organisations, together with COSCO Shipping Lines and the Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG), the Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission (SMTC) are working on the implementation of the ‘Green Shipping Corridor’. The decarbonisation of maritime transport is to be accelerated through cooperation with technical suppliers, energy suppliers, cargo owners, terminals and shipping companies.
Agreed objectives include providing appropriate shore power connections to all container terminals in each port, promoting the supply and use of green fuels, encouraging technical suppliers, energy suppliers, cargo owners, terminals and shipping companies to commit to the Green Shipping Corridor goals, and sharing knowledge and information to support the Green Shipping Corridor objectives and best practices.
Jens Meier, CEO HPA and President of international ports body IAPH said: “The establishment of a green shipping corridor supports the sustainable development of both ports and sets new standards for the global maritime industry. Close cooperation between all parties, such as terminals, shipping companies and energy suppliers, plays an important role in achieving the goals set for sustainable shipping.”
