Membrane containment system company GTT has received an Approval in Principle (AiP) from ABS for the NH3-ready notation of its Mark III containment system on LNG-fuelled vessels.
This approval enables LNG tanks equipped with Mark III technology to be converted for ammonia (NH3) use aboard LNG-fuelled vessels, enhancing their versatility by allowing them to operate on another fuel in their second life. This AiP is said to highlight GTT’s commitment to developing sustainable and flexible solutions for the maritime industry, ensuring that ship-owners and operators can adapt to evolving environmental regulations and maritime standards.
David Colson , VP Commercial, GTT, said: “We are very proud to receive this new AiP, which testifies to the relevance of our Mark III technology for ammonia-fuelled ships following the extensive test campaign carried out by GTT. While the use of ammonia as fuel is still to be proven, this approval brings us a step closer to enabling multi-gas conversion on vessels fitted with GTT technologies, reinforcing our position at the forefront of sustainable maritime solutions.”
Rostom Merzouki, ABS Global Gas Solution Director added: “ABS is pleased to award this AiP to GTT for their practical NH3-Ready Mark III containment system. This development aligns with our commitment to supporting the maritime industry’s transition to alternative fuels and demonstrates the potential of Mark III technology in addressing future energy challenges.”
