Spanish shipyard Gondan has held a Steel Cutting Ceremony to mark the start of construction of the next Northern Lighthouse Board (NLB) vessel, which promises to modernise maritime safety in Scotland and the Isle of Man.
The NLB, which has been responsible for the management of lights, buoys and beacons in the region since 1786, plays an essential role in safe navigation. The new hybrid-powered vessel, to be delivered in mid-2025, will be equipped with up to date technology, advanced navigation systems and will be environmentally friendly.
Gondan says it is committed to delivering a high quality vessel to improve safety in Scottish waters and support local industry.
The vessel is designed to meet the ambitious environmental targets set out in the UK Government Clean Maritime Plan, whilst future proofing the NLB’s ability to deliver its vital services over the next 25 years.
