Dutch company Conoship International Projects (CIP) has developed an environmentally friendly 3600 dwt general cargo vessel, described as being ‘future proof’, and suited for sea-river operations.
A series of six of these diesel-electric propelled cargo vessels will be constructed at the Fosen Yard in Emden, Germany. CIP says it carried out extensive market research and proactively marketed the vessel, looked for clients, and sourced shipyards. Furthermore, CIP actively brokered between finance houses, owners and shipyard.
The ‘green’ features include an optimised diesel-electric propulsion system, enlarged propeller in combination with a ConoDuctTail and optimised hull lines for low fuel consumption, considered best in class, especially in adverse seas. The ‘future proofing’ includes provision for wind assistance, in the form of two Econowind VentiFoils, which would reduce the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by around 10%, depending on sailing route.
The EEDI of the vessel as calculated as a diesel-driven vessel is already around 35% below the phase 3 requirements. Furthermore, a switch of fuel type to future fuels such as liquid hydrogen or ammonia is part of the design concept, which takes account of the requirements for future fuels. The ship will be 88m long, 13.2m wide, with maximum draught of 5m. Cargo volume is quoted as 180,105 ft3 and a service speed of 10 knots is envisaged.
Conoship says that design makes the vessel suitable for construction at a variety of shipyards in North Western Europe.

Carsten Stellamanns, MD Fosen Yard Emden, said: “We are delighted with the order. The order is intended to become a flagship project and attract other similar projects to the region. Since 2019 we want to re-establish shipbuilding in Germany, at least in certain segments with Fosen Yard Emden, as a member of the Fosen Group. The yard in Emden is located on an area with over 550.000 m2 and has a long tradition of building various types of vessels. Its 100 employees enable it to build high quality at competitive prices.”
The construction of this first series of six cargo vessels is planned to start in spring 2022, with the whole series expected to be delivered in 2023.
