FKAB DESIGN SELECTED FOR FOUR NEWBUILD GREEN MR TANKERS.

Swedish company FKAB Marine Design has announced its involvement in a newbuilding project of four 41 000 dwt MR tankers for an unnamed European owner that will be built at Xiamen heavy industries, China.

The FKAB T67 is a Tier III product and chemical tanker (IMO II & III) vessel, designed for compliance with future environmental regulations, at the same time applying innovative eco-technology for the next generation of green ships, optimised for worldwide operation.

Special attention is being paid to optimised hull lines including FKAB’s patented F-bow resulting in energy savings and reduction in CO2 emission over the ship’s life. The vessel is designed with high standard European accommodation and equipped with battery pack and shore connection for supply of green electricity during port operation. All pipes except the manifold are located inside the closed pipe trunk, which runs from aft to forecastle.

The propulsion system consists of one medium speed engine coupled to a CP propeller and a shaft generator. The shaft generator can be used as ’take me home’ and will be connected to the electric network via a frequency converter allowing variable speed of the engine and propeller for both PTO / PTI and PTH. In port during discharging the main engine will be used as a generator through a remote operated hydraulic clutch that disconnect the propeller shaft from gear.

The vessels will be built to Ice class 1B, and are 199m long, 3.2m wide with a design draught of 12m. Fuel consumption at the 13 knot service speed is estimated at 16t/day, with a predicted EEDI of 3.63, which FKAB says compares favourably with the required EEDI by 2025 of 4.77.

FKAB marine design will be involved in both basic and detail design, through the FKAB Sweden and FKAB China offices.
