Denmark has launched a scheme whereby government finance worth DKK 1.25m will be invested in large-scale production of green fuels, with Power-to-X plants producing green hydrogen using electricity from wind turbines and PV cells.
Four different companies will be responsible for six different projects, which will take part in a tender process.
Industry body Danske Rederier (Danish Shipping) notes that the first ‘green’ ships have been launched, but fuel supply is still an issue. Several Danish shipping companies have announced that they are ready to purchase new green fuels when they become available.
Anne H. Steffensen, CEO Danske Rederier said: “It is really good news that the state is investing DKK 1.25bn in a number of PtX projects. Denmark has an important role as a leading country in the production of green fuels. And in Denmark, we have good potential for delivering large-scale production of green fuels via Power-to-X. Green fuels, within shipping will be in great demand in the coming years. The first green ships have been launched, but we are short of fuel, so I am glad that the government is moving forward.”
Climate, Energy and Supply Minister Lars Aagaard said: “We are investing heavily in a technology that converts green electricity into hydrogen and into fuels that can be…. poured into the tank of a ship. It is climate action that can help both Denmark and our European neighbours get rid of fossil fuels such as coal, gas and oil and bring us closer to the climate goals. I am happy that the industry has shown such great interest in getting started.”
