SWEDISH FERRY PAIR TO GO ALL-ELECTRIC

Swedish battery system company Echandia has received an order from the Ö-varvet shipyard to supply two vessels, Älvsnabben 4 and Älvsnabben 5, with battery systems to enable full electrical propulsion.

The battery systems will each have a capacity of 496 kWh. The total cost of ownership, combined with Echandia’s high level of safety and long lifetime were key factors in selecting Echandia as battery supplier. The systems ordered will contain 16 battery strings per vessel and manage 18 cycles per day, 365 days per year with an expected lifetime of at least 17 years.

Echandia CCO Göran Fransson said: “Electrification of the maritime industry is rapidly gaining traction. This order from Ö-varvet gives us further verification that our systems are a perfect match for vessels that require outstanding lifetime and safety in operations.”

The two vessels, first delivered in 1994 and 1995, will be rebuilt by Ö-varvet in Öckerö, Sweden. They are used for passenger traffic to both sides of Göta älv in Gothenburg. The vessels measure 31.55m in length and 8.15m in width. The passenger lounge has 158 seats, and the maximum permitted passenger capacity is 448. The cruising speed is 12.5 knots. Älvsnabben 4 and Älvsnabben 5 are operated by the shipping company Styrsöbolaget.
