ANOTHER LNG-FUELLED CRUISE DELIVERY FROM MEYER

Dec 16, 2022 | Shipbuilding & ship repair news

German yard Meyer Werft has handed over the cruise ship ‘Arvia’ to the UK company P&O Cruises, part of Carnival.

The sister ship of Iona, built in 2020, Arvia also has low-emission LNG propulsion.

Yard MD Jan Meyer said: “The current tense global situation, with supply bottlenecks and material shortages, poses challenges for the construction of such complex cruise ships. But thanks to the team’s performance we were able to overcome these hurdles and today once again hand over a ship that meets the high Meyer-standards. For this I would like to thank all those involved for their great commitment.”

The Arvia is fuelled by LNG, considered one of the cleanest fuels currently available for shipping. In addition to reducing CO2 emissions, this means that emissions of NOx and particulate matter can be almost completely eliminated, and SOx completely avoided. All cruise ships in Meyer Werft’s current order book feature a similar low-emission propulsion system.

With capacity for around 5,200 passengers in 2,659 cabins, the ship’s features include the SkyDome, with a glass roof that can be opened for warmer cruising areas.

Kim Olin, Project Manager of the ship said: “The two project teams from the shipyard and the shipping company, the many suppliers as well as the classification society have done an excellent job under extremely difficult conditions.”
