SCHOTTEL POWER FOR FIRST HYDROGEN TUG

Aug 17, 2022 | Marine propulsion & machinery news

The first hydrogen-powered tug worldwide, recently launched by the Astilleros Armon shipbuilding group in Spain, and which will operate in the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, will be equipped with Schottel propulsion systems.

The main propulsion system of the tug consists of two Schottel 2,000kW SRP 460 RudderPropellers featuring propeller diameters of 2.4m. With this thruster configuration, the 31m long and 12.5m wide vessel will achieve a bollard pull of about 65t.

The SRP units are driven by engines that burn hydrogen in combination with diesel. Combustion of hydrogen does not emit any CO2, and the particle filter combined with the catalyser will result in minimal emissions of NOx and particulates.

Jacques Vandermeiren, CEO, Port of Antwerp-Bruges, said: “With the Hydrotug, the Port of Antwerp-Bruges is making an important step in the transition to a sustainable, CO2-neutral port. The port is systematically pursuing a policy of making its entire fleet eco-friendly by incorporating the most environment-friendly technologies available on the market.”

Following its delivery in early 2023, the tug will execute harbour operations in Port of Antwerp-Bruges which is among the biggest ports in the world and the second-largest seaport in Europe, after Rotterdam. Thanks to its location, it offers direct access to the rest of Europe over roads and rail.
