BV APPROVES BASIC DESIGN OF SYDROGEN MARINE FUEL CELL

Mar 27, 2025 | Marine fuel & lubricant news

Hydrogen fuel cell technology developer Sydrogen has received a Basic Design Assessment (BDA) Statement from Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) for its Maritime Fuel Cell – SydroPOWER series model MZ250N – as the focus model for the maritime industry.

This is said to mark a pivotal step towards commercialising Sydrogen’s advanced fuel cell solutions for the maritime industry. Sydrogen’s SydroPOWER series leverages proven automotive hydrogen fuel cell technology from its partner Shanghai Hydrogen Propulsion Technology (SHPT) to deliver high efficiency and environmental benefits. The system is designed to provide reliable power for a range of maritime applications.

Additionally, by providing an alternative to conventional fossil fuel-based power systems, Sydrogen’s SydroPOWER series significantly reduces GHG emissions and other pollutants, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change and promote cleaner oceans.

The BDA Statement, which represents a more advanced stage of validation compared to an Approval in Principle, is a testament to the design and evaluation processes that the SydroPOWER MZ250N has undergone, demonstrating compliance with safety, performance, and reliability standards. This underscores Sydrogen’s commitment to fostering strong industry relationships and driving innovation, which will support adopting clean energy solutions in the maritime sector, contributing to a sustainable and zero-emission future.

With the BDA Statement secured, Sydrogen is poised to accelerate the deployment of its SydroPOWER MZ250N Maritime Fuel Cell technology, paving the way for widespread adoption in the maritime industry. The company is actively engaging with potential customers and partners to explore opportunities for pilot projects and commercial installations.

Teo Eng Dih, CEO, Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, said: “We welcome the efforts by Sydrogen and its partners in advancing hydrogen fuel cell technology for maritime use. The Basic Design Assessment is an encouraging milestone that reflects momentum across the industry to explore cleaner energy solutions. We invite more innovators and solution providers to support the maritime energy transition.”

Gian Yi-Hsen, CEO Sydrogen, said: “Receiving this Basic Design Assessment Statement from Bureau Veritas marks a transformative moment for Sydrogen Energy. This achievement is not just a validation of our technology’s safety and reliability, it represents a significant step forward in our mission to revolutionise maritime energy solutions. The development of MZ250N under the SydroPOWER series, alongside this statement, demonstrates our commitment to leading the maritime sector’s transition to clean energy alternatives. The maritime industry is at a crucial turning point in its journey toward decarbonisation. With Bureau Veritas’s BDA Statement and the development of SydroPOWER MZ250N, we are not just participating in this transformation, we are helping to lead it. The SydroPOWER series provides shipowners and operators with practical, efficient pathways to meet their environmental goals while maintaining operational excellence.”

Matthieu de Tugny, President, BV Marine & Offshore, said: “BV is pleased to grant BDA Statement to Sydrogen’s MZ250N Maritime Fuel Cell, recognising its potential to advance hydrogen-based energy solutions for the maritime industry. This reflects our commitment to supporting innovative technologies that enhance safety, reliability, and environmental performance. Hydrogen fuel cells offer a promising step toward decarbonisation, and we look forward to collaborating with Sydrogen and industry stakeholders to drive sustainable progress in maritime energy.”
