Capital Group has been honoured with the ‘Tanker Company of the Year’ award at the Lloyd’s List Greek Shipping Awards 2024. in recognition of its initiatives in shaping the maritime industry’s energy transition.
The award was given because Capital Group was regarded to have gone beyond any other tanker and gas carrier owner in Greece in its investment in the energy transition. It has invested not only in dual-fuel ammonia vessels and dual-fuel LNG vessels but also large LCO2 carriers, a world first. The group’s recently rebranded public arm, Capital Clean Energy Carriers, has 12 latest generation LNG carriers in the water, six more on order, eight midsize gas carriers, and four handysize multi-gas ships able to carry clean ammonia and liquid CO2. The shipowner’s commitment to modern ships and ability to find profitable sale and purchase deals advancing the group’s strategy are considered exceptional and are evident in its oil tanker fleet with 14 new LNG dual-fuel VLCCs, Suezmaxes, and LR product tankers on the way. Capital was one of five founding shipowner members of LR’s Maritime Emissions Reduction Centre in Athens, established in 2024.
Evangelos Marinakis, Chairman and Founder of Capital Maritime & Trading, said: “Greece provides us with a safe haven to conduct our business, and on the other hand, we are involved with a global business that has nothing to do with the government with all the complications our country sometimes faces. We are free to compete in the real world with huge international shipping companies, and try to be competitive and create value for our partners, for our companies, for our people. To be successful in our business, you need to have the right people, so it has to do with togetherness, it has to do with the ability and the skills of our crew members, of our staff ashore, of the organisations we do business with, our partners—like classification societies, our bankers, our brokers, our charterers, the oil majors.”
The first time Capital received the award was in 2009. This second award is seen as a proof of its strong desire and energy to innovate and be exceptional.
