Norwegian government enterprise Enova SF has announced an NOK 80m grant to cover part of the investment cost to build the Grieg shipping group’s emission-free ‘Green Ammonia’ tanker.
Vidar Lundberg, MD Grieg New Energy, said: “We have developed the MS Green Ammonia project with Pilot-E support since 2021. We are pleased that Enova is now supporting the continuation of the project with investment support.”
Green Ammonia is an innovative project designed to fulfil the growing demand for green ammonia in the shipping industry. This vessel serves as a green ammonia distribution and bunkering vessel, capable of transporting up to 5,000t of ammonia per trip to various customers. Its design offers significant flexibility to adapt to changing market needs and includes both ship-to-terminal and ship-to-ship bunkering capabilities. This versatility allows the ship to effectively meet a wide range of customer requirements.
In addition to transporting green ammonia, the ship will use ammonia as fuel on board. By installing dual-fuel engines, the project aims to meet up to 85% of the ship’s energy needs with ammonia. The vessel will be equipped with energy-saving technologies, including batteries, a shore power connection, and wind-assisted propulsion. Green Ammonia received approval in principle for its design in 2022 and is deemed safe for using ammonia as fuel.
Lundberg said: “We are working closely with end-users to further develop the business model and commercial use that makes MS Green Ammonia competitive in a new and growing market. We collaborate on this with key players in the maritime industry and firmly believe that the MS Green Ammonia vessel concept will be crucial for establishing an efficient value chain for green ammonia.”
Green Ammonia is planned to be delivered in 2028.
