HYDROGEN FUEL CELL POWERED BARGE BEGINS OPERATION

Dec 9, 2024 | Ship design & naval architecture news

Ship designer LMG Marin reports that the ‘Zulu 06’ inland waterway barge, developed as part of the Flagships H2020 Project project, has begun operation.

The vessel integrates hydrogen fuel cells, enabling seven days continuous operation with zero emissions. The FLAGSHIPS project is intended to raise the readiness of zero-emission waterborne transport to a new level by deploying two commercially operated hydrogen fuel cell vessels. The project is coordinated by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland.

The project has received funding from the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen 2 Joint Undertaking, supported by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and from Hydrogen Europe.

LMG Marin has been part of the project consortium, having the responsibility to design the hydrogen fuel-cell room and the hydrogen containment area as well as to perform risk analysis and supporting the owner during the approbation process.
