BILBAO PORT TO INSTAL GREEN SHORE POWER

Dec 4, 2024 | Marine environment & clean shipping news

A proposal for setting up a photovoltaic solar plant in the Port of Bilbao to supply power to vessels at berth has received approval from the Council of Ministers.

The works will mean that the on shore power supply (OPS) system to be deployed to power vessels at berth will use green energy. The aim of the BilbOPS project is to reduce pollutant emission and noise levels from vessels at berth.

These works, costed at just over €13m, form part of the BilbOPS project of the Bilbao Port Authority to electrify the docks for onshore power supply. The deployment of an OPS system will make it possible for vessels at berth to switch off their auxiliary engines, thereby reducing emission and noise levels.
