ClassNK CERTIFIES EVERGREEN’S CII ASSESSMENT FOLLOWING OCCS TRIAL

Oct 2, 2024 | Ship classification news

Earlier in 2024, the onboard carbon capture and storage (OCCS) system installed on an Evergreens neo-Panamax container vessel successfully captured CO2 from its exhaust gas emissions.

The captured CO2 was offloaded to a shore facility and was recycled. ClassNK has now confirmed the amount of offloaded CO2, and deducted this amount from the ship’s annual CO2 emissions in CII assessment under the direction of the Panama Maritime Authority, the vessel’s Flag Administration. This series of initiatives anticipates practical operations that ClassNK considers may be widely conducted in the future to reduce GHG emissions and, as such, is believed to be the first case globally. The Japanese classification society says this is a significant step for the maritime industry to achieve net-zero GHG emissions.

The parties involved in the trials and subsequent assessment were:

  • Panama Maritime Authority: Determination of the deduction of captured CO2 amount from OCCS system from annual CO2 emissions in CII assessment
  • Evergreen: Installation/operation of OCCS system, and capture/offloading/ recycling of CO2
  • Shanghai Marine Diesel Engine Research Institute: Development of OCCS system and technical support for the operation
  • ClassNK: Confirmation of compliance with safety requirements in accordance with the Guidelines for Shipboard CO2 Capture and Storage Systems and the amount of offloaded CO2.

ClassNK says it is committed to supporting stakeholders’ proactive initiatives toward decarbonisation by providing appropriate standards and surveys as a third party.
