PENINSULA SUPPLIES BIOFUEL IN BARCELONA AND EXPANDS IN NORTH EUROPE

Aug 16, 2024 | Marine fuel & lubricant news

Marine energy company Peninsula has recently completed a successful biofuel bunkering of the containership ‘Yantian Express’ from the IMO II chemical tanker, ‘Aalborg’ for Hapag-Lloyd in the Port of Barcelona.

The 88,500gt vessel received 2,200t of B30 VLSFO. The sustainable biofuel used for this blend was ISCC EU certified biodiesel derived from used cooking oil (UCOME). The addition of the Aalborg to the Port of Barcelona facilitates the adoption of lower carbon marine fuels in the Western Mediterranean. Peninsula has established a close working relationship with the Port of Barcelona and as a result Peninsula now supplies a range of bio blends and traditional fuels. The sustainable fuels are ISCC EU certified, allowing shipowners to comply with Fuel EU Maritime regulations, EU ETS reductions and to reduce CII ratings.

Victor Morales, CCO Peninsula said: “We are proud to be offering a mix of conventional and alternative fuel solutions in the Port of Barcelona. We have recently seen good demand for biofuels, and are delighted to supply Hapag-Lloyd, who are taking positive action to reduce their GHG emissions. Peninsula is providing a broad range of solutions, as we partner with forward-thinking shipping companies, like Hapag-Lloyd, on the road to net zero.”

Meanwhile, Peninsula has announced a significant expansion of its physical supply network into the English Channel and North Sea. The new operations will provide comprehensive port coverage, adding to Peninsula’s already strong footprint in Antwerp, Rotterdam, Amsterdam (ARA) plus Skaw and Copenhagen. To support these new operations, the company is to deploy two specialised seagoing tankers, one of which is already in operation. These vessels will enable deliveries in regions where in-port bunker facilities are typically limited.

To manage the expanded supply region, Peninsula has welcomed four new traders and operators to scale-up regional business. This expansion is said to underline Peninsula’s commitment to extending its physical footprint and to offering customers new, tailor-made supply solutions. By connecting the new Zeebrugge hub and expansive supply zone to its existing regional coverage, Peninsula is extending its footprint in the Northern European market.
