LNG-FUELLED CAPESIZE BULKER DELIVERED TO ‘K’ LINE

May 30, 2024 | Shipbuilding & ship repair news

Japanese company Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (‘K’ Line) has taken delivery of ‘Cape Hayate’, a 210,000-dwt ton capesize bulk carrier fuelled by LNG from the Tsu shipyard of Japan Marine United.

This is the first capesize bulk carrier for ‘K’ Line to be equipped with a dual-fuel diesel engine that utilises LNG as its primary fuel. LNG fuel is expected to reduce emissions of CO2 by 25% to 30%, SOx by almost 100%, and NOx by approximately 75%, which meets IMO Tier III NOx regulations, compared to conventional vessels using HFO. It is equipped with a dual-fuel electronic control engine, 7X62DF-2.1 iCER from WinGD, which will reduce methane slip when using LNG fuel. ‘K’ LINE will also install a Seawing automated kite system to further cut carbon emissions.

The 299.9m vessel will be engaged in the carrying of steel raw materials for JFE Steel Corporation under a long-term consecutive voyage charter contract.
