‘K’ LINE TESTS PCTC ON 100% BIO-DIESEL

May 20, 2024 | Marine fuel & lubricant news

Japanese shipping company Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (‘K’ Line) has conducted its first use of marine B100 biofuel which was supplied by global energy management company World Fuel Services on the ‘K’ Line-operated PCTC ‘Apollon Highway’.

The marine B100 biofuel was delivered to the vessel at the Belgian port of Zeebrugge, and after leaving the European Emission Control Area, the vessel started using the B100 biofuel.

According to ‘K’ Line, marine biofuel has the potential to become an environmentally friendly alternative fuel, it will be able to reduce CO2 by about 80-90% in the well-to-wake (from fuel generation to consumption) process without changing current engine specifications. The trial was conducted using marine B100 biofuel composed of 100% biodiesel, made from renewable organic resources such as biomass which do not utilise foodstuff or feed crops.

‘K’ Line’s 2030 interim target is to improve CO2 emission efficiency by 50% over 2008, surpassing the IMO target of 40% improvement, with the aim of reaching Net-Zero GHG Emissions by 2050. The action plan is to work on the introduction of new low-impact fuels.
