HD Hyundai Heavy Industries – Engine and Machinery (HD HHI-EMD) has completed the development of its methanol dual-fuel HiMSEN H22CDF-LM engine, and has received type approval from seven classification societies.
The H22CDF-LM has been certified by the classification bodies KR (Korea), ABS (USA), BV (France), DNV (Norway), ClassNK (Japan), LR (UK) and RINA (Italy).
This engine is the second model to complete development after the dual fuel H32DF-LM, believed to be the world’s first methanol engine of its type, developed by HD HHI-EMD. The engine selectively uses diesel and methanol and has power ratings of 1,440kW to 2,160kW. According to HD HHI-EMD the latest design greatly improves the effectiveness of installation and management, offering higher engine efficiency compared to existing engines, thanks to the e-HBU (electro-Hydraulic Boosting Unit), the company’s independently developed methanol boosting unit.
HD HHI-EMD expects to expand its market into various vessel types through these type approvals, considering the unit suited to applications such as feeder container, tanker, and bulk carriers. Type approval testing of the HiMSEN ammonia DF engine, which is in the spotlight as another eco-friendly fuel, is scheduled to be conducted in the second half of 2024, and it is expected to solidify its position as a first mover of the eco-friendly fuel engine market by ultra-gap technology.
