Norwegian Ship Design (NSD) has announced a new contract for another electric ferry, to operate between the town of Svolvær and the small island of Skrova in the Lofoten Vestfjord region.
In close collaboration with Torghatten Nord, NSD is developing the 73m ferry, to the NSD 50CFb design, to accommodate 50 vehicles and 199 passengers. During the summer the ferry will additionally operate across the Vestfjord to Skutvik on the mainland. This two-hour crossing over the exposed Vestfjord is a major tourist attraction.
Due to the harsh weather conditions north of the Arctic Circle, the ferry is designed with a fully enclosed car deck. The design has focused on low energy consumption, and despite it not being a requirement in the tender, Torghatten Nord chose to opt for fully electric operation between Svolvær and Skrova. This, according to NSD, reinforces the operator’s forward-thinking position in green shipping and a willingness to embrace future-proofed and innovative solutions.
The battery electric ferry will be built at Western Baltija Shipbuilding in Klaipeda, Lithuania, and will enter service once delivered from the shipyard, scheduled for 2026.
NSD has expressed its gratitude in once again cooperating with a shipping company and shipyard that believes in its emission-free designs, and shows trust in choosing NSD as partner in another green project.
